The Maybrook Trailway is a newly-created segment of the Empire State Trail, the New York State-spanning multi-use trail.

The Route
8.4 miles one-way 16.8 miles round trip; Downhill from north to south +87 ft / -352 ft elevation change from north to south
Start in Holmes, New York
Park in the lot at the trailhead on Route 292 in Holmes, just north of its intersection with Holmes Road.
Ride south along the trail, through the Great Swamp.

An old railway...
...runs alongside the new trail. The Maybrook Line operated as a freight and passenger route until it fell into disrepair and was abandoned.
The Ice Pond
You can only reach the Ice Pond on foot, or by bike.
A steel bridge has had a facelift; new timber decking spans another (active) train line below, as the trail heads into the Great Swamp.

Watch for Farm Animals...
...on the path! Pigs and sheep graze directly alongside the path in Holmes.
Finish at the trailhead just north of Pumphouse Road, in Brewster, then retrace your route back to the car.
